How to Help Your Child with Homework

Homework is a daily task that most children dread and one which parents may feel intimidated by. Even if you don't know how to help your child with their calculus homework, there are many things you can do to help your child complete their homework.

Do Homework Together

As a parent, you may think that because you're no longer in school, you don't have homework to complete. On the contrary, you likely have daily tasks that need to get done that have some academic significance. Anything from balancing your finances to getting some reading done can all count as your homework. When your child settles into their workspace daily, pull out your own homework and work in the same room. Working side by side with your child can be a great motivator and distraction fighter for both.

Allow Homework Breaks

If your child has a particularly large load of homework or a ton of studying to get done, allow them to take short breaks every so often. Giving your child the opportunity to go for a walk, take a shower, or grab a snack will help them get back to their work with more energy and better concentration. Your child may be tempted to turn their 20-minute break into a longer one, but remind them that the sooner they finish their work, the more free time they will have.

Motivate Your Child

To keep your child working hard towards completing their homework, show them that you notice and appreciate all the work they do. Show interest in their work and stay positive even when talking about hard subjects your child struggles with. If you notice your child is having a particularly hard time with one subject, look for additional resources that can help them master it.
