How to Ensure Your Child's Mind Stays Active During the Summer Months

Although a break from classes can be good for students, an inactive summer can actually cause your child to lose some of the information they learned over the school year. There are a variety of ways to combat this summer slide. The Tutoring Center in Hillsborough has some tips that can help you encourage your child to keep learning this summer.

Encourage Physical Activity

Take advantage of the warm weather and long summer days with fun outdoor activities. Your child should participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity daily, whether it's playing with friends or participating in a sports team. Encouraging your child to head outdoors and play can have a positive influence on their ability to concentrate and can even help improve behavioral issues. Physical activity has also been linked to improvements in math and reading test scores.

Practice Writing Exercises

Writing may be a tough activity to have children participate in over the summer because it requires concentration which is easily broken by other activities. One way to encourage writing is by creating a summer journal with your child. To make things more fun, let your child choose the topics they want to write about. For older children, allow them to create a blog online and write shareable blog posts. If your child struggles with the thought of journaling, assign them less obvious writing tasks. For example, have your child write a letter to a relative that lives out of state or ask them for help writing the grocery list.
