As mentioned in a previous post, it is natural for you to feel anxious about a test, but you should never allow your nerves to get the best of you. Aside from the tips mentioned in that post, you can also develop a test taking strategy to help you do your best during the exams. If you’d like a few tips on how to take a test properly, keep reading this post!

Test Taking Strategies

  1. Write down your name as soon as you get your test. You’d be surprised at how many tests get misplaced because the students forget to put their name on it. Don’t risk it and identify yourself from the get-go.
  2. Before you start your test, make sure to read everything (instructions and possible answers) thoroughly. You can use this time to ask the teacher about a direction that isn’t completely clear.
  3. Do not feel rushed during your test! Think about your answers and write them down with legible penmanship and in comprehensible sentences. Make sure to respond as instructed.
  4. If you have a lot of questions to get through, answer the easiest ones first. This way, you’ll be able to get them out of the way and focus on the harder ones later on. Just mark the ones you’re skipping at first so you are reminded to come back to them.
  5. Do your best and of course, do not cheat! A test isn’t just for a grade; it is also a way to identify how much you’ve learned and the areas you need to improve in. Trust in your knowledge and work through it.
  6. Don’t forget to check the back! Often times, you may think you’re done with a test without realizing that you missed a few questions on the back of the sheet. Ensure that you’ve answered the whole test before handing it in so you won’t miss any points.
  7. Lastly, when you think you’re 100% done with a test, remember to review all of it before you turn it in. There may be some mistakes you could’ve made that you can correct before giving the test to your teacher.
