SAT Help: Math Concepts You Need to Know

While you will find a list of formulas you can use, the SAT will expect you to know and understand the following concepts. Here are a few mathematical concepts that you will likely find on the SAT.

Pythagorean Sets

The SAT loves to use right triangles with exact integers for side lengths. You should memorize a few of them: 3/4/5, 5/12/13, 6/8/10, 7/24/25, and 8/15/17. Keep in mind that these are side lengths, and not measures of angles.

'Less Than' Trick

The SAT often tries to stump you with the following wording: "y less than x." Make sure not to fall for their trick. The above statement means x-y, not y-x.

Multiples & Factors

The multiples of x are the numbers you get when you multiply x by another integer. The multiples of 6 are 12, 18, 24, or -6, -12, and so on. Zero is a multiple of every number. Factors are the numbers you get when you divide x by another integer. The factors of 6 are 1, 2, 3, -6, -3, -2, and -1.

Remainder

The remainder is the whole number that remains after division. 10/3=3 and a remainder of 1. Put the remainder over the divisor to create a fraction or mixed number. 10/3=3+1/3.

Consecutive Integers

Consecutive integers are numbers that come immediately before or immediately after each other. 3, 4, and 5 are examples of consecutive integers. The SAT may ask for consecutive even or consecutive odd integers, so make sure to understand what that means.

Sum, Product, Difference, Quotient

The sum is the result of addition. The answer you get when you add two or more numbers together is the sum. The product is the result of multiplication, difference of subtraction, and quotient of division.
