Oral Reading Tips

For a student to be a great reader they need to master a set of reading skills. These skills include phonics, fluency, and vocabulary building among others. To help your child develop better oral reading skills, use these tips.

Start Reading at an Early Age

Introducing your child to reading concepts at an early age can help them feel more comfortable with this activity. Even if they can't read yet, read out loud to them and point out words as you say them. Once they develop the ability to associate sounds with letters, reading out loud to them can help them develop these skills further. Not only will your child feel more confident with reading, they may even develop a love for it early on.

Correct Mispronunciations

Once your child is able to read, make daily reading time where you can both participate in the activity together. As your child reads out loud to you, listen to their pronunciation. If they struggle with a word, stop them and help them sound out the word. Once they have the pronunciation down, have them repeat the word and then the entire sentence. Doing this can help ensure they comprehend what they're reading while also helping them develop their reading fluency.

Follow Up

After reading together, make some time to follow up on what they just read. Ask some questions about the plot of the story or the characters involved in order to ensure they are able to follow along as they read.
