How to Set SMART Goals

Setting goals for the school year is a great way to ensure your child stays on track throughout the year. To set SMART goals, follow these steps.

Make Them Specific

All goals should be specific so that your child knows exactly what they're working towards. For example, instead of deciding they want to get a good grade in math, have them decide what grade they're aiming for. Simply striving for a good grade leaves good up to interpretation. This can cause them to slack off a bit and not do as well as they hoped. Instead, have them decide what grade they want so that they can make a plan that will help them get there.

Be Sure They're Measurable

In order for a goal to work, it should also be measurable. This means your child should be able to measure their progress in order for them to decide if they're on the right track. As they measure their progress, they can either keep going on the same track or make small changes to their plan if they're not where they should be.

Set Attainable Goals

Anything is possible, right? Although we like to believe this, we do have to be realistic. Your child's goals should be attainable, meaning they should stretch your child's abilities while still being possible. If your child is setting goals that are just not possible, they may be setting themselves up for disappointment. Avoid this by creating a plan for each goal that proves they can accomplish what they set out for.

Your Goals Should Be Relevant

Whatever goals your child chooses to aim for, make sure they matter. If your child is setting goals for things they really don't care about, they may not be motivated to accomplish them. Encourage them to set goals that are worthwhile and that will give them a sense of accomplishment when complete.

How Much Time Do You Need?

Finally, your child's goals should have a deadline or target date. This will help keep them motivated and working hard to achieve their results by a certain time. It helps to set long term goals with short term deadlines that will help keep them going.
